16 Jul 2018 (HK01) Most of HK people Afraid of Administrating AED Because Lack of “AED’s” Knowledge

The medical field believed that using AED earlier for the sudden cardiac arrest patients would have a higher chance for survival. Many AEDs were placed at different public places in the recent years. People could use them for the patients suffered from SCA. However, Hong Kong people were lack of knowledge on using AED.

Every minute passed, the chance of survival of the patient would be lower 7-10%. Hong Kong St. John Ambulance provides certified courses for people to use AED. People could learn about AED in 4 hours including examination.

A doctor, president of Resuscitation Council of Hong Kong, Mr. Siu mentioned that, “if a person with collapsed with no breathing, we can determine him suffering sudden cardiac arrest.”

There are 5000-6000 cases of sudden cardiac arrest outside the hospital every year in Hong Kong. Only 2.3% would be survived, which was lower than Taiwan and Japan. It was believed that the survival rate was corresponding to the numbers of AED.
