A 57-year-old Chinese man was doing Core Muscle Training at a Fitness First centre in Kwun Tong and collapsed after working out for about 15 minutes. He was sent to hopsital immediately but later died.
Another British man, aged 59, collapsed while working out on a fitness bicycle at a Physical Fitness centre in Wan Chai. The deceased was obese (over 90 kg) and was suspectd to suffer from Myocardial Infarction (MI) that caused his death.
According to Dr. Lobo Louie, Associate Professor from the Department of Physical Education, Hong Kong Baptist University, core muscle training should be done for 30 minutes to 1 hour and is necessary before any exercises. It is a partial body training to help strengthen one's muscles to avoid risk of injuries. Compared to core muscle training, which has 60-80% chances to cause SCA, excessive work out on fitness bicycle is 90% more likely to cause SCA as the heart reaches the cardiac load limit.
