Cameroonian Midfielder Patrick Ekeng collapsed on the pitch during a match in Romania and died in the hospital afterwards, aged 26. The first-aid company was held responsible for the footballer's death as their equipment was found insufficient and the qualification of ambulance personnel was questioned. The company was fined and its license was supended for 30 days.
Reports indicated that batteries in some of the AEDs equipped on the contractor's ambulances had already expired. Three ambulances were on stand-by during the match that day but none was equipped with an AED. First aid service was not prompt and some of the medicine used had also expired.
