10 Dec (HKET) Heart disease is the number one killer in the world, first aid is an important skill

Heart disease is the number one killer in the world. If an acute heart attack causes the heart stop pumping and blood cannot provide enough oxygen for the brain. If the heart is stopped for more than 4 to 6 minutes, the brain will suffer irreversible damage.

Effective high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the correct use of automatic external defibrillator (AED) can improve the survival rate. AED can detect and analyze the heart rhythm automatically. If electric shock is needed, the shock will be given automatically. During the rescue process, AED will continuously instruct the rescuer what to do in order to help the victim.

With the efforts of the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, AEDs are not difficult to find in different public places such as shopping malls, fitness centers, MTR stations and airplanes. As long as we learn how to use it, we have a chance to save lives.

The Hong Kong Red Cross, Hong Kong St. John's Ambulance Service and various professional societies hold regular first aid courses. The Basic Life Support Skills Course (BLS) can generally be completed within 3 hours. We can learn first aid and protect the people around us..
